A long-lost painting from the late 13th Century is going up for auction after it was discovered hanging in an elderly woman’s kitchen in France. According to the BBC, art experts say that the painting discovered in the kitchen turned out to be the masterpiece “Christ Mocked” by Florentine artist Cimabue. Infrared light tests were soon done to confirm the artwork’s origin and to determine if there were similarities with other works by Cimabue. This piece of art, dating from 1280, is believed to be part of larger work of painted panels depicting Christ’s passion and crucifixion. The painting could fetch up to $6.5 million at auction next month.
