Top 10 Ads From The Big Game
Written by Tony Schultz on February 8, 2021
What was expected to be more of a barn burner of a game turned into a bit of a letdown. “The GOAT” versus “The Kid” didn’t live up to the hype that most thought it would be, but it was entertaining for the most part. The biggest discussion every year seems to be about the commercials though. Which ones were the best and which ones missed the mark. I followed all game long and thought some were merely “OK”. There wasn’t a huge number of “OMG” ads but enough to get us through the game as best we could. Most were funny and few touched at the heart strings. Here’s my list. Let me know what your favorites were.
Tide, Toyota, Bud Light, M&M’s,
Honorable mention: T Mobile Blake Shelton and and Gwen Stefani. This only gets Honorable Mention because they’re a great couple, but the concept gets lost because it was supposed to be about a bad connection causing trouble. However, this was a great connection. Weird.
#10: Cadillac. There were several nostalgia inducing commercials last night, but this one got many right in their feelings. The whimsical music and Winona Ryder reprising her role gave it that heartfelt vibe that had us remembering childhood.
#9: Fiverr. I liked this one mostly because it took a subtle jab while still putting a small business more firmly on the map.
#8: Rocket Mortgage. Tracey Morgan delivers moments that you should be certain and not “pretty sure”. They had two of these, but his one was the better of the them.
#7: GM. I heard a lot about this commercial as the game approached. It did not disappoint! Will Ferrell nailed it with his false comedic anger as always. Look out Norway! What makes it even funnier? Audi put out a response ad.
#6: Jeep. Nothing like Bruce Springsteen traveling the countryside in his CJ-7 (with no top on in the winter. Must have a great heater) telling us about trying to heal and get reunited. That we need to meet in the middle of our country. Note: this is in the middle of the list. 😉
#5: Doritos 3D. Matthew McConaughey is feeling a little “flat” in this ad. CGI may have been the bigger factor in this ad, but his timing and the ending made it all worth it. I do feel they missed an opportunity to use something he is famous for saying 3 times: Alright, alright, alright.
#4: M&M’s. Needless to say I felt it was a great commercial to start with and it almost held on to the top spot for most of the night. If you know someone named Karen, please act accordingly.
#3: Bud Light. This was a real commercial of genius! Speaking earlier of nostalgia no one did it better than Bud Light. After an accident all the previous Bud Light commercials appeared in Avengers: Endgame like fashion to help out. Dilly, dilly!
#2: Toyota. Partnering with the Olympics and Special Olympics they got at out heartstrings with a powerful message. I have to admit it got a little dusty in the room watching this one.
#1: Tide. I’m not sure I’ve laughed as hard as I did yesterday in a while. Watching the situations a “Jason Alexander” hoodie went through and it’s corresponding facial expressions was by far the most entertaining thing to watch. I’ve watched it several times since and I still laugh.
