‘Field of Dreams’ Game Brings MLB to Iowa

If you’re a baseball fan like me I’m sure you’re just as excited as I am about tonight. In 2019, Major League Baseball made the announcement of a ‘Field of Dreams’ game to take place at the site of the iconic 1989 movie of the same name in Dyersville, Iowa. It’ll be the first ever Major League Baseball game to be played in Iowa.

Originally the game was scheduled for 2020, however the pandemic changed that and pushed it back until this year. It was also announced that the game would be the Chicago White Sox versus the St. Louis Cardinals, but that was also changed and instead the New York Yankees will take the place of the Cardinals.

The movie is definitely my favorite baseball, or sports movie and to have a professional baseball game on a field in Iowa surrounded by corn brings back memories to my childhood when friends and I would get together on the farm and play a game of whiffle ball while using whatever we could find for bases while trying to hit home runs into the corn.

Dyersville is a small community in eastern Iowa with a population around 4,000 people. The stadium was specifically built for the game and sits next to the ballfield where the movie took place. It will hold about 8,000 fans nearly twice the population of the town. In July, there was a lottery for Iowa residents to purchase tickets so about 25%, or 2,000 of the fans in attendance will be Iowans.

Kevin Costner, who starred in the movie, will throw out the first pitch. The game will be broadcasted on Fox starting at 6pm.
