COUNTRY STAR OF THE MONTH: MITCHELL TENPENNY
Written by admin on September 1, 2022
Mitchell Tenpenny is having a bit of a moment. He has two songs currently in the top 10 on the Country Charts with “Truth About You” getting to the top 5 this week and his team-up with Chris Young on “At The End Of A Bar” slowly climbing back down after a run at the top. Mitchell, like many artists was most likely set to make some more moments before the pandemic set in in 2020. He was enjoying the success of his hit song “Drunk Me” and was probably ready for that next step in 2019 while making an appearance at Country Boom. He also had success as a songwriter with Granger Smith’s “If The Boot Fits” showing he can do more than just sing.
Born and raised in Nashville it’s not hard to imagine the music bug caught him early. At the age of 11 he was introduced to song writers Bobby Braddock and Curly Putman by his grandma and this got him interested in songwriting. After he graduated from high school he went on to earn a degree in Music Business from Middle Tennessee State University. In 2015 he released his first album Black Crow with the title track as his debut single. Three years later he he put out his self titled album and the single “Drunk Me” and it became a hit. Mitchell has had duets with a few singers over the years. He and RaeLynn performed “Get That All The Time” in 2021 and he and Colt Ford shared the mic on “Slow Ride” in 2019.
Mitchell has a soft voice that spreads over the speakers like a Motown artist more than a country singer. However, he has a strong pop sound to his music which shows his diverse influences in music spanning from Vince Gill to Michael Jackson. “truth About You” comes off his 2021 album This Is The Heavy and it has a mix of different songs where he teams up with producers that push a bit more of his pop sound. His album The Low Light Sessions was released in April and has a collection of songs devoted to relationships and standing by those that deserve more than they believe they do.
