200 FISHERMAN RESCUED FROM MINNESOTA LAKE WHEN ICE BREAKS FREE

This time of year there are a few things we’re reminded of weather-wise: slow down in bad weather, make sure your cell phone is charged, wear a warm coat, and stay off the ice when it’s not safe. Every year you see a picture or news story of someone going through the ice with a vehicle or going through on their own. A rescue ensues and hopefully everyone is OK. These stories usually happen early on as ice fishermen want to get out and wet the line. Even if the ice is “safe” it doesn’t mean there can’t be exceptions. For example, maybe the entire ice shelf can shift and start floating into open water. That’s what happened on Upper Red Lake in Minnesota as a huge chunk of ice (way bigger than what Yukon Cornelius used to escape the bumble snow monster) broke from the ice and started to float with about 200 anglers on it. Luckily some folks noticed and called for rescue. After a few hours they had them all safely back to shore. Just a friendly reminder to be careful if you’re heading out.
