PEN PALS CELEBRATE 100 YEARS OF BIRTH
Written by Tony Schultz on December 6, 2022
Being a “Pen Pal” is not as common as it used to be. Do they still have class projects to become Pen Pals with someone? For those that don’t know, a Pen Pal is someone you basically write letters to on an occasional basis to make contact with and share what’s going on in your life. Usually a school would contact another school in another state or country and set it up to write someone. You could learn about how things go in another place through those correspondences and maybe make a friendship. My wife became really good friends with her Pen Pal in Utah and still keep in touch since they were in grade school. Conversely, I couldn’t tell you who my 3rd grade Pen Pal was other than they stopped writing me and I got over it pretty quickly. How about having a friend who you’ve only seen two times face to face over 84 years? That’s what the story of these Pen Pals is. They have been sending letters, email, and finally a Zoom meeting to celebrate their 100th birthdays! I think it’s really cool that they have remained in contact even during World War 2! They didn’t respond immediately or even every month from the look of things. There are people now that freak out if you don’t text them back in 30 seconds.
