LAKE SUPERIOR FREEZES CLEAR ENOUGH TO SEE TO THE BOTTOM

Every year we’re warned to stay off the ice until it’s think enough to walk on. One of the things to look for is if the ice appears “black” or you can see through it that it probably isn’t safe to be on. There are rare cases when this isn’t the case and you get crystal clear ice. Lake Superior has had that phenomenon recently and it’s cool and scary at the same time. while the ice is 5-6 inches think and safe enough to walk on it is also crystal clear and you can see to the bottom. Judging from this video it must feel a little disconcerting to walk across it when you can clearly see the lake bed and the lines in the sand. I wonder if it makes it harder or easier to catch fish when they can see you sitting there.
