BEST COMMERCIALS FROM THE BIG GAME YESTERDAY
Written by Tony Schultz on February 13, 2023
The “big game” isn’t just known for what’s on the field. Many people tune in for the bevy of wonderful or comedic commercials that grace the TV. Some people watch just for that reason alone. Some years are great and some are not. This year was kind of just OK. Nothing Earth shattering and epic, but a nice sprinkling of commercials that were still buzz worthy. What I found interesting is that most of the movie trailers we usually see were instead short blurbs to go watch the latest trailer online. Quite the departure from previous blockbuster showcases. With that in mind I left them out of contention even though the latest “Indiana Jones” and “Creed” trailer were shown in full. Here is the list of the 12 best commercials whether they were funny or heart touching and had some thought put into them.
- Workday’s “rock star” ad was the funniest ad of the day!
2. Pop Corners/Breaking Bad. Even if you’ve never seen the show you most likely got the pop culture reference.
3. GM/Netflix EV crossover. Putting Will Ferrell in Netflix shows with EV vehicles was smart and funny.
4. Ram’s Premature Electrification. The imagery was hilarious and the “ad within an ad” was spot on.
5. Dunkin’ (Doughnuts) Ben Affleck. Ben really worked the drive thru. They filmed it. An actress makes a cameo!
6. Busch Lite with Sarah McLachlin. Making fun of her animal rescue ads? Priceless!
7. T Mobile with John Travolta. Doing a riff on Summer Nights where he nails the “oh” was classic. Made me miss Olivia Newton-John though.
8. Michelob Ultra Caddyshack commercials. They had two but here they are fully connected. Wish they had someone do a Rodney Dangerfield impersonation, but Romo as Carl and having Danny Noonan in the commercial made it great!
9. Tubi interrupts the game. Personally I wasn’t fooled, but my son thought I did something with the remote as it looked just like our TV menu. Apparently, many viewers were scrambling for the remote after this one. 15 seconds of buzzworthiness.
10. Hellman’s Brie and Ham. A play on names and Pete Davidson made for a surreal and funny ad.
11. M&M’s. Admit it, they duped you with the whole “canceled” thing. They had a follow up after the game with all the characters doing a press conference.
12. Amazon dog at home. This was a heart string puller of an ad that hit home with pet owners and the furry family members that got used to us being home during the pandemic.
