PSA: WARN OLDER ADULTS ABOUT NEW SCAMS USING AI

Written by on May 3, 2023

As we seem to finally be reaching the future we all dreamed of with self driving cars, video calls from anywhere, and artificial intelligence that can help with everyday tasks the human race shows their incapacity to handle such technology. It seems there is a daily misuse of the technology that has been developed and of course the slimiest of individuals have found a way to trick those most vulnerable. We’ve all received that email or maybe even the phone call from a “friend” or “relative” in trouble and they need us to get them money to get them out of said jam. Most of us know that these are scammers and we delete them or simply hang up. There are a number of older people out there that unfortunately don’t understand this is a scam and get caught up in them. The new thing is using A.I. to mimic someone’s actual voice off of limited samples and call people. They say they’re in trouble or, in this case had an accident. Recently a grandfather got a call with an A.I. mimic voice saying it was his grandson and that he got into a wreck and the line went dead. He contacted his granddaughter to try to find her brother. After calling him frantically with no response they finally found out it was a scam call. She posted about it on Tik Tok as a warning to others that this is a real thing and to be aware. It’s scary to think what someone could do to a vulnerable adult with this technology. So, make sure you talk to your older family members that when they get a call like this to call a trusted family member to get confirmation and to NEVER give any information over the phone that might compromise their finances.
