JAMES CAMERON IN MINNEOSTA SCOUTING LOCATIONS

It’s not often anymore that films are filmed in Minnesota or really the tri-state area. Back in the 90s there was a bevy of films made and about Minnesota. Feeling Minnesota, Jingle All The Way, Fargo, and Grumpy Old Men just to name a few. That quickly stopped when certain taxes were implemented that caused Hollywood to look for other places to film, namely Canada. While I can understand the State getting part of the pie from income taxes it really put a damper on things. It’s sad when you see a movie or show about somewhere in the world that was primarily filmed somewhere else. I remember wanting to catch an episode of Supernatural because the story was going to be based in Winona. The opening shot was what I could only guess to be some generic shot of a small town in New Hampshire with a bevy of colorful fall trees and a water tower in the middle of town. Definitely NOT Winona. In fact, that entire series revolved around the mid-west and none of it was filmed here. It was nice to here that James Cameron was in Duluth scouting for a movie! Now, there is no definitive answer as to why he was scouting there but the man that made the Titanic more famous than it already was might be looking at another storied ship wreck, the Edmund Fitzgerald. It is one of the most storied shipwrecks in history and even had a song written about it. So, maybe he’s looking to put his magic touch on that or other stories about the famed Lake Superior and it’s shipping heritage. Who knows? Just as long as there isn’t a fake love story that distracts us from the REAL story. No word if there is a giant diamond at the wreckage or just a hunk of iron off the range.
